Why restuarants and cafes?

We have all eaten out, so when people think of the hospitality industry, it’s probably restaurants and cafes they think about.  Many of you may have thought about what it would like to work in the restaurant business as a bar attendant or chef.

You may have already decided that you would like a career in the industry or even have the dream of owning your own restaurant or café.  It is an exciting industry, where you meet lots of people and have the satisfaction of creating or serving great dishes or drinks for them.

Australia has a large number of restaurants and cafes (over 37,000) for its population. They range from quick service outlets like delis and cafeterias to sophisticated five-star restaurants offering full service and fantastic meals and beverages. And they are situated all over the nation - in cities, suburbs and regional and rural areas. Some restaurants only serve dinner whilst others offer lunch and dinner, while many cater for functions as well. Cafes usually do breakfasts and many are open 24 hours. Most restaurants are independently owned but some are situated in clubs and hotels.

Where could I work?

So there is great variety of places in which you can work, offering very varied working hours. And as there are shortages of both cooks and food and beverage attendants, there are usually many jobs available.

If you think you would like to work in a restaurant or café, you will need to enjoy meeting people, like working with food and beverage, have good communication skills and be able to quickly solve problems. You will also need to have good product knowledge and the technical skills needed for your area of interest.
