Where can hotels take me?
The type of hotel you choose to work in is likely to reflect where you would prefer to stay yourself. Many people like small, cozy places where they can feel at home and get to know other guests, whilst others prefer the glitz and glamour of the five-star hotel. However, larger hotels offer more career and job opportunities as they provide a greater range of services and cater to a larger number of guests. Work in hotels can be full-time or casual and located in the city or rural and regional areas. Hotels are usually looking for staff so if you have the right skills and attitude it should be easy to find jobs.

What is working at a hotel like?
Working in hotels can be pretty demanding and as in all jobs in the hospitality industry, you will probably be working shifts, evenings and weekends. You will be dealing with people of all types from those just like your neighbors, business and sports people and international tourists who don’t speak much or any English to the occasional rock star and government minister. You will have to deal with requests for such things as a soft pillow or Russian caviar served at 3.00 am. And there will be all sorts of incidents to deal with, mostly everyday things like spills and accidents and people not turning up, to more rarely, broken lifts, unruly guests and visits by celebrities trailed by paparazzi. Life will never be dull if you work in a hotel!
You can see that no matter what type of hotel you work in, you will gain a wide range of skills and be provided with career opportunities as well. You could become a food and beverage manager, a housekeeper, a functions manager or even the GM!
