Many people currently working in the hospitality industry have gained their skills and knowledge whilst working on the job.  And while employers often rate attributes like attitude, personal presentation and work experience more highly than formal qualifications, undertaking training can certainly enhance your chances of finding work in the industry.

Qualifications are not required for most positions in the hospitality industry but a wide range of training opportunities is available in this sector.

These include:

• short courses that can take just a few hours to complete but give you some essential basic skills and knowledge;

• traineeships and apprenticeships where you can study and work at the same time as you gain a nationally recognized qualification;

• courses available at TAFE or through private training providers that will give you a nationally recognized qualification and;

• university degrees that provide you with tertiary qualifications specializing in hospitality.

Regardless of which industry training option you choose, it is critical that you gain as much work experience as you can as well.
